La Primavera, Allegory of Spring depicts figures from classical mythology in an orange grove. On the far left is Mercury, the Roman God of Trade and Commerce.
Next to Mercury is The Three Graces. These figures represent the feminine virtues of Chastity, Beauty, and Love. In the center of the artwork and somewhat set back from the other figures, stands Venus, and seen above her is a blindfolded Cupid. On the right side of Venus is another group which includes Zephyrus, the west wind, at the far right who is about to take a nymph named Chloris. After taking and marrying Chloris, she is then transformed into Flora, The Goddess of Spring. She is seen throwing flowers that have gathered in her dress, standing between Venus and Chloris.
The exact meaning of the piece is unknown, however, we do know that it was made in the late 1470s or early 1480s.
