Sad irons were used to iron clothes before the advent of electric irons.
This particular type, the "Mrs. Potts" sad iron, was invented and patented by Mary Florence Potts in 1870.
The removable handle allowed for a system where multiple iron bases could be heated, and the handle could be switched to a hot base as another cooled, improving efficiency.
