Vintage or Antique Indigo Dye/Batik/Applique Total size is 17.5 x 17.5 inches. (14 x 14 is inside size of actual art work)
I purchased this exquisite piece when I was living in South East Asia from 1977 for several years. It was already antique when I purchased it.
Made with natural indigo on cotton, with twelve red appliqué accents.
In sewing, an appliqué refers to a needlework technique in which patterns or representational scenes are created by the attachment of smaller pieces of fabric to a larger piece of contrasting color or texture.
Indigofera tinctoria, also called true indigo, is a species of plant from the bean family that was one of the original sources of indigo dye. It has been naturalized to tropical and temperate Asia, as well as parts of Africa, but its native habitat is unknown since it has been in cultivation worldwide for many centuries. I hope some Museum gets it eventually! Antique piece ~ so much intricate detail! Last photo shows close up from the back.
