Chessie: The Railroad Kitten, by Thomas W. Dixon, Jr. TLC Publishing, 11th printing, 2000. The winsome illustration of the sleeping cat represented the Chesapeake & Ohio Lines beginning in 1933 (and is still used by CSX Transportation, the successor of the B&O). This glossy softcover volume includes delightful color and b&w photos and illustrations of the calendars and ads featuring Chessie through the decades. 64 pages. $20

Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen, by Bob Greene. Paperback with embossed cover, 2003 edition, published by Perennial. During WWII, all cross-country US military personnel on their ways home by train passed thru North Platte, Nebraska. The townspeople created & volunteered to staff a canteen at the station, offering warmth & support around the clock. More than 6 million GIs were welcomed to the Canteen by the time war ended. $5
