For sale is a very large, intricately carved, solid hardwood murti (devotional statue) of LORD GANESHA (also called Ganapati or Vinayaka), one of the most beloved and widely worshipped deities in the Hindu tradition. Ganesha is the remover of obstacles, patron of wisdom and learning, and bringer of good fortune.
This powerful and elaborate statue captures Ganesha in a majestic seated posture, regally poised atop his vahana (vehicle), the mouse, symbolizing humility and the ability to reach even the smallest corners of the world. In this case, a small elephant riding on a large mouse!
With four arms, Lord Ganesha holds sacred attributes: a broken tusk, a goad (to spur spiritual seekers onward), a sweet (symbol of the rewards of spiritual practice), and a hand in abhaya mudra (the gesture of protection and reassurance). His iconic elephant head signifies wisdom, understanding, and a discriminating intellect. I leave you to research how Ganesha acquired the head of an elephant!
A grand circular prabhavali (radiant arch) frames the deity in divine light and energy. This element also serves as a celestial gateway — a spiritual portal between the earthly realm and the divine. Note the remarkable detail: swirling motifs, curling lotus petals, and layered headdresses — hallmarks of traditional South Indian craftsmanship.
Ganesha’s form here is richly adorned with jewelry, a multi-tiered crown, sacred thread, and a layered dhoti — all rendered in deep relief with masterful precision. The figure is carved from solid, heavy hardwood (likely teak or rosewood) and stained a rich reddish-brown, imparting warmth, depth, and reverence. The craftsmanship and style suggest a South Indian origin, likely from the late 20th or early 21st century.
Weight: substantial (requires two people to move safely)
This Ganesha murti is in excellent condition, with no cracks or structural damage. A commanding and spiritual centerpiece for a home altar, meditation studio, yoga center, or Asian art collection. Inspiring wherever placed.
