The painting depicts a chapter from the Japanese novel The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari) written in the 11th century by Murasaki Shikibu. It would have been painted to be included in an album along with paintings of the other 53 chapters during the Edo period (1615-1868). It has minor water damage (photo included) but has been displayed in a moisture-free, climate-controlled apartment for at least a decade. The dimensions indicate the framed size, the painting itself is about 18x20 inches.
