Strong enough to hold all your gold coins in! It appears to have been 'ebonized'. It also has a thick steel plate for the bottom which is held on with 14 screws and 3 metal reinforcement bars. It should be able to hold all of your gold bars! LOL! I don't know much about it (although I have had it for almost 30 years). The 'top' is missing and not sure what it was originally. There is only one pull on one side and it is apparently an antique rustic farmhouse Chippendale pull. The size is 10" tall, 14.5" wide, and 10" deep. It has loads of character! The hinge on it is a solid, full hinge piece. Flathead screws. Pull is missing from other side. Please note the antique rustic farmhouse chippendale steel bail pull which is there on one side. One is missing. Just one of these can be found selling for $20 on the web! The steel plate which IS the bottom of this box is 13" x 8.25" and is held together with 14 screws. I have since cleaned up the bottom which is why the last two photos look different from the bottom of the previous ones. The inside seems to have been done with pieces this person had in his shop. See last photos. Seems someone took a lot of time to carve so much of this piece into nice detail.
