Screens are approximately 71 inches high. Each of the two screens contains 4 panels, each of which are approximately 16 inches wide (each screen thus being approximately 64 inches wide when displayed completely "flat".) Seller has always used screens standing but they would be equally as lovely hung flat on a large wall.
Screens were purchased in Japan in the mid 1930's at which time they were estimated to be about 100 years old. This estimate is consistent with the independent appraisal obtained in 2002 (see below).
Age appropriate wear including some scratches and chips to lacquer finish. Some of the hinges are separating somewhat but remain attached. Pictures attempt to give a good "reading" of the condition. Additional pictures are available if desired.
If you desire screens in pristine condition (and therefore relatively new), these are not for you. They are, however, for the buyer who is interested in the patina of age and in the history (both known from the 1930's to now and wondered about/guessed at prior to that time) of the screens.
Pictures 1 and 2 show the Summer Palace side of the screens and 3 and 4 show the bird and floral side. Pictures 5 and 6 show some detail of the Summer Palace side and 7 and 8 detail of the bird and floral side. Pictures 9 through 12 attempt to show some of the age related wear.
Screens were appraised in March, 2002 by a Sotheby's Associate and were, at that time, valued at $17,800 for full retail replacement for insurance purposes. Screens remain in the same condition as they were at the time of appraisal. Seller will furnish original appraisal documentation to buyer, if requested.
