Invasive Exotic Plant Workshop (Erwin, TN)

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) is seeking volunteers to participate in an invasive exotic plant workshop on Saturday, December 12 along the Appalachian Trail near Erwin, TN. The focus of the workshop is to educate hikers and the general public about the threats of invasive exotic (IE) plants and how to identify 15 of the most threatening species in the region. The workshop will also involve removing IE plants to protect that section of the Appalachian Trail corridor. There is no charge for the event and teachers are eligible to receive credits toward Criteria II or III for the North Carolina Environmental Education Certification Program.

Participants will meet at 9:00 a.m. at Uncle Johnny�s Nolichucky Hostel and Outfitters (151 River Rd. Erwin, TN 37650). A workshop led by expert instructors will outline the threats that IE plants pose to native biodiversity and how to identify about 15 of the most threatening species in this region. The workshop will offer training in the tools and techniques used to inventory IE plants and methods used to safely remove invasive exotic species, including manual and chemical controls. Guidebooks will be distributed to participants to aid them in future identification and control of IE plants.

Following the educational portion of the workshop, participants will put their skills to work using mechanical and chemical methods to remove or treat privet, honeysuckle, periwinkle, or other IE plant species found along the Appalachian Trail. The control work will be concluded by 5 p.m.

ATC will provide all equipment needed for the workshop and control project. Volunteers are asked to bring lunch, two quarts of water, and rain gear. Volunteers should also wear sturdy hiking boots, pants and a long sleeve shirt. Carpooling is available from Asheville, leaving the U.S. Forest Service building (160A Zillicoa St. Asheville, NC 28801) at 8:00 a.m. and returning to Asheville by 6 p.m.

I work with people who are losing their homes to foreclosure and they can not provide a Christmas
for their children this year. These aren't your typical needy families. They are hard working, middle class
people like you and me. But due to circumstances beyond their control, they have creditors calling at all

before or right after Christmas. Their children have experienced hard times and have lost all hopes of having

The Asheville-Mountain Area Chapter of the Red Cross is seeking new volunteers to work either in our Blood Center or off-site at our Blood Drive locations. Volunteers will work as either greeters or canteen assistants.

Blood Services Greeter
The Blood Services Greeter is responsible for greeting and registering incoming donors with or without appointments. Greeter assists the donor in completing the necessary steps upon entering the donor room (i.e. check-in, read required materials and escort donor into donor room).

Blood Services Canteen Assistant
The Blood Services Canteen Assistant is responsible for serving donors a snack and beverage after their donation. The canteen assistant will also inform the donor of any current drawings, promotions or giveaways. We encourage our canteen volunteers to interact with donors, encourage them to donate again and watch for any signs of dizziness or sickness.

We specifically are looking for someone to work as a greeter from 7:30am - 10:00am in Blood Center on Wednesdays. However, we will accept volunteers with other availabilities as well.

HI !!
I am a high functioning man, diagnosed with a mental illness ( schizoid affective disorder ) , extremely talented in specific functions, however the ability to make decisions about what to do on a daily basis, and even to be on time for appointments and to get to sleep at an appropriate time in the evening has escaped my functioning ability. Unfortunately social services has cut my services when i was getting better.
I cannot pay at this time , but will in the future with your help , when i can get a part-time job.
If you can invest with me a half hour to an hour a day of your time, on the phone or in person, and perhaps a 2 to 5 minute call here and there, or whatever you can offer would be so appreciated, and i can get on with my life.

I am amazingly talented at professional massage, yoga instruction, singing, piano playing, even motivational speaking, yet i cannot live on my own. I will usually stay awake till 2 to 4 am, unless someone makes sure i am in bed, ready to fall asleep by 10 or 11 pm. My mind has extremely racing thoughts and compulsion to stay up all night , and then naturally with a life like this, out of control i have suffered with severe depression at times, and usually after a work-out at the gym it is completely gone. I also have sometimes extreme anxiety as to what to do, as i never developed the ability to make these decisions. I can do a handstand on the top of any car, and even on a chair. I am not perceived by friends to be depressed in the public, it is in the alone times , that i am in trouble.

We are in need of Area Representatives for a well respected student exchange program. We bring high school-aged students to the United States to spend six or ten months studying and living as an American teenager. An Area Representative is a volunteer position that receives a stipend per student placed.

Stipends range from $650-$800 for a year student and $450-$600 for a semester student. Stipends are paid in three installments throughout the year, based on completion of certain tasks. The first stipend is paid after the student arrives in the country.

Pisgah Legal Services is experiencing an increase in the need for legal services to secure basic needs: safety, housing, subsistence income and essential assets. One of the biggest challenges faced by Pisgah is our capacity to screen callers for income eligibility and case priority. Our volunteer assists the receptionist in greeting clients, copying legal documents, gathering the mail & assisting callers on the telephone. The receptionist also inquires about the type of case and the underlying problems leading to the legal issue to determine if the matter is a priority for Pisgah to handle. Experience with a multi-line phone system is a plus. Ideally, we seek a dedicated volunteer with excellent communication and listening skills.

Additional volunteer positions are needed to support the Pro Bono Department on an ongoing basis: once a week for 2-3 hours with a commitment of several months at a time. Duties include tracking of pro bono cases with data entry, client communication, closing cases, communication with private attorneys and helping to increase litigation support to pro bono attorneys. This is a great opportunity for meaningful legal volunteerism that would help thousands of low income clients a year. Projects may also include continuing legal education and pro bono clinic support.

Casual attire is permitted.
Flexibility in work shifts available.

This volunteer project aims to support Mshimba High School in Coast province, Taita Taveta District, Kenya. The mission of the School is to provide quality education to the students for a better tomorrow and their goal is to make the institution a centre of academic excellence. The School's motto is "Education for Progress".

Mshimba High School was started in 1989 by the community and later on the Government took over. The school is managed by a board of governors. It is a mixed school for boys and girls, with boarding facilities for boys only. There are 4 classes from grade 1 to 4. The school has 140 students in total. The number of staff is 8 teachers and 5 non-teaching staff. The school offers 11 subjects: Math, English, Kiswahili, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture, History, Geography, Business Studies and Computer (IT).

Volunteer work: Volunteers' major duties include:
� Teaching the pupils English, Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and IT;
� Running extra curriculum activities such as Drama, Theater, Music, environmental activities; � Teaching Sports;
The volunteers will be working from Monday to Saturday, Monday to Friday - 5 hours a day and Saturday - 3 hours.

Special requirements: English, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Physical Education/Sports and Biology teachers are needed. Knowledge and experience in teaching the aforementioned subjects is mandatory. Information Technology (IT) teachers are highly required, but the school has only one computer. This is not sufficient to teach the whole class, but the school is in the process of getting more computers.
We have an open policy and applicants with other ideas to share are also welcome to apply and will be considered.
Volunteers need to contribute/initiate ideas and by that would be promoting the growth of the School. This is an opportunity for the volunteers to work at a community/grassroot level in capacity building and training in self-sustainability.

Duration of the project: The schools in Kenya run from January to April, from May to August and from September to November. The time frame is open.

Age range: 20 and over

Discovery Studios, a division of Discovery Communications, Inc., is currently searching for people to feature on a new hour-long documentary style series about hoarding.

For those willing to participate, we will offer the assistance of a licensed therapist and professional organizers who can offer support.

This series will explore why people hoard, what process can be undertaken to deal with this issue, and how an in depth look at the problem can lead to positive change for those who are involved.
