2008 competition is over and it is time to move on to 2009. The competition will be held in mid to late March of 2009, so we are now looking for entries to start coming in as soon as late September. Why is Rising Star a great competiton? We have professional judges; we offer great prizes; you can be a solo or a group; you can sing any type music (classical, country, gospel, opera, pop, rock or show tunes); you can perform cover tunes or an original (we make no claims on your music); the song selection must be family friendly. We had agents and producers attend finals in 2008. Prizes for Youth (age up to 18)valued at $2500+ and prizes for Adults (age 18 and over) valued at $4000+. Most sponsors are returning, this includes studio time, head shots, teeth whitening, a make over a day at a local spa and more. So I want to play loud, fast, and thick punk with rockabilly influence. Not complicated, not mathematical, not avant-garde (fuck mike patton), not jam, not stoner bull shit. Simple chord progression, mostly power chords. If you can sing it's a bonus, but not necessary. punk look and attitude a plus. I play bass and my roommate plays drums. Between us, we have bass, guitar, amps, pa system, two drum sets, mics, cables, mixer, etc, etc. The more experience the better, but don't be afraid if you've only been playing a year. if you can keep time and play the right chord, that's probably good enough. Mobile and affordable recording for bands and singer/songwriters on a budget. Will travel to your practice place, set up, and record (Asheville Area). Allow a couple of days for mixdown. The rate is $15/person per song. So a three piece band wanting two songs would be $90. Tracking four songs for a four piece band (two vox) usually takes a full day (8-10hrs)

Singer songwriter rate is $25/song. Any additional instrumentation other that his or her main instrument would be considered another member.

Everybody has different demands. Prices are negotiable depending on your needs. I use a Boss BR-864 (8 track digital) for recording and mixing. Extra charge may apply for bands with over four members since I will have to bounce tracks. The price rate for a song is intended for songs up to five minutes or so. I usually track instruments one at a time. I have average mics for drums, guitar, etc. A pretty good tube mic for vox. It's not a high end studio by any stretch; but, I pretty good at working what I got.

I am curious about taking a survey on who has had success with meeting a musician in person and actually taking it to the gig level from meeting someone here on CL.

Before I get started with some more questions I want to tell you a little about my own personal experience. When I was in high school I played drums and I wanted to keep a band going after my older friends had graduated. There was a tack board at the local guitar shop asking for a drummer to start a band. With phone numbers attached to it, and I took one and left a guy named Brad a message with my number.

The year is 2000 and I still don't have a cell phone, just the family house number, and about week later Brad calls my mom answers and Brad thinks my mom is my wife. Honest mistake, but confused the hell out of my mom.

Brad wants to meet up and I some how agreed to do so even though the voice on the other end was groggy and maybe a bit hung over. No red flags there, not to 17 year old. The next day we meet around 3 in the afternoon, I had to get out of school, at the local Taco Bell. Brad arrives and eats a bean burrito. Brad looks about 40 and kinda looks like he may or may not be taking Meth.

He invites me out to his house to listen to some demos he's made, again I agree and we ride out to his trailer which is a half hour away and completely in the sticks. Brad's music is pretty heavy and thrash metal kind of. The band I had just come out of was a white boy reggae rip off sublime cover band. There was no chance of us ever mixing well, but I stayed at Brad's house for three hours and he made me a pepsi and rum drink and I smoked a black and mild. This was a weird Wednesday afternoon.

His house didn't have any instruments out around in it, but there was a ton Egyptian decor, and he didn't really know what it all meant. By the time it was 6 o'clock I was ready to go, and I don't think I smoked any of his dirt weed with him. Brad then called my house for the next three months but I never returned his calls.

This may now always play in the back of my mind when I get emails on here. What if I am back to being a 17 year old kid in some one's trailer listening to thrash metal and how someone spent their time in prison and has a lot of relationship issues with their current on again off again girlfriend.

I guess my question is, has anyone else met a "Brad" and did that ruin your ideas of ever meeting complete strangers again?

Just curious. I will likely keep posting on CL for musicians and read the other posts.

I am going to bring a brand new kit to Asheville when I move, and I expect to use it as much as possible. I'm moving to Asheville towards the end of July and am looking for people to start a project with. I'm a recording engineer and have a decent amount of gear to record with. I play bass, synthesizer, guitar, and program.

I'm pretty into several different things right now, including but not limited to:
Boris, Sigur Ros, Cave In, anything Ken Andrews did, Smashing Pumpkins, Modwheelmood, Mouth of the Architect, John Frusciante, Refused, Brian Eno, David Bowie, Adrian Belew.

I'm pretty tone crazy, and great interesting tones are what I'm really into. I want to work on something very dynamic, something that can be really heavy and pretty at the same time, and have the ability to be fairly poppy at some points as well.
